SUBMIT YOUR WORK

Gumball Poetry is looking for your best.

— At least we used to be. Thanks for stopping by this way. We're no longer actively publishing. A small, not necessarily newsy note about this is here.
We wish you all the best.

Poetry - What we like

We like poems to surprise us, to twist us up. Poetry that uses vivid imagery and unusual language, a mix of intellect and emotion. We like poetry to take on ideas. Originality. We'll read nearly any subject matter (no racist or sexist hogwash) as long as the poetry explores it deftly

But hell, don't listen to us. Make it good. When it's good, send it in. If we agree, we'll publish it. Presto!

Note: Readers are able to add comments and ratings to accepted poems published to the Gumball Poetry website. We feel this enhances the feel of the community - much like opening up a Gumball Poetry capsule at a table full of friends. Gumball Poetry will not fully moderate these comments, and we will not remove them.

Payment: At this time we do not offer payment - only fame, notoriety and a copy of your published work sent to you in the mail.

Format

Note: We don't care if you've been published before, but we do enjoy receiving cover letters - they don't have to be long, just jot down some notes about yourself, the weather, or what-have-you.

Postal: Please mail submissions that are legible.
email: Paste them in an email, or attach them as a text or RTF (rich text format) file.

Please send a range of your work, say 2-5 poems. Though we prefer to publish previously unpublished work, if the work has been published, let us know where. We reserve the right to republish the work in an anthology, if we happen to do so. Copyrights revert to the artist. We promise to get back to you regarding your work within three months time. See our publishing schedule here.

We ask, because of the medium of the gumball capsule, that you not submit poems over approximately 40 lines in length. However, if you do submit a poem longer than forty lines, and we cannot resist it, we will find a way to publish it.

How to send it

Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope as well as a few brief notes about yourself. Also, read the note below about comments on your work.

Gumball Poetry
PO Box 11907
Portland, OR 97211

We now have a submission form for online submissions. If you would like to submit via email, please attach your poems in text, or Rich Text Format (rtf), or paste them into the email. We encourage you to take a look at our online submission form first, before sending submissions via email.
Include a few brief notes about yourself as well as a postal address.

Also, we now have a great, sparkling bunch of readers who have strong literary opinions and who often-times take the time to write a few comments about your work. If you would rather not receive comments on your work, please indicate so on your submission.

Art

We publish drawings/photographs on the backs of the poems that are put in the Gumball Poetry Machines. We also publish them online.

What we like...what do we know? We're literary types (except for Ezra, who's a sculptor). We have a wide range of tastes, so give us a try. However, a look at some past artists will help. See past artists Christine Theresa and Tom Lechner

Because of our medium (the gumball capsule) we can only accept line or photocopy-able art. Some black and white photos work, and some don't. Photocopy your piece to see how it looks, if the way it looks is acceptable to you, send it in to us.

At this time we do not offer payment - only fame and notoriety and a copy of your published artwork sent to you in the mail (yes, it will most definitely come in capsules).

Please include a cover letter (anything at all you feel like telling us) as well as a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope for return of the work if we chose not to use it. Send it to:

    Gumball Poetry
    PO Box 11907
    Portland, OR 97211

Or submit via email (please send us smaller images first) contact us

Do you Flash?

New media. This is where you designers, internet types, and computer geeks come in. We're talking flash. Flash is cool, it's tasty, it's pretty, and if you make it, we want it. We're also looking for Gif animations. Poetic, unusual, artistic, interesting work, that would be the ideal. If you think you've got some, and you want the extreme, in-your-face fame that naturally comes by being published by Gumball Poetry, then email us. Please send an email of warning (letting us know how big it is) or point us to a website where flash exists before sending it outright.

Do you run the other side? Databases, backend tricks, programming gizmos? We are most interested. Drop us an email.

Not sure what Flash is? Go here. Want to know more about Gif Animation? Click here. Want to learn one of the neatest little scripting languages on the planet? This is it.
