NOTE: Gumball Poetry is not placing any more machines currently....Thanks though

Would you like a Gumball Poetry Machine in your:
café bar restaurant dance hall office
hospital library school bathroom art gallery
clothing store car community center life church

GOOD REASONS TO HAVE ONE:

  • It's cool, it's art, it's supporting and creating culture, it puts poetry in new places and makes it accessible and interesting to a wide range of people. It could have the ability to really mean something to someone at exactly the right time.

  • The above is the most important point. We don't currently pay ourselves (three and a half years and counting) and most likely you won't get incredibly rich either.

  • Make Money. OK, it's possible. If you own a business, it might bring in traffic. If you own a bar, café, or restaurant it might keep people there longer, talking and ordering more food. It just may make your customers more intelligent, more profound. And if you've bought a machine from us, you get all those quarters!

  • We'll put you on our website - either you get your own page (we'll make it according to our format) with a wittily concocted blurb about your establishment, its location, a photo, and what it's like there, or we'll link directly to your own web page, if you have one.

So here's how we're doing machines these days. (updated May, 2003)
We encourage new machine owners to host .50 machines (2 quarters) -- though there are still options for people who want 25 cent machines.

These options are more or less listed from most expensive (least labor) to cheapest (most labor).

--buy a machine from us, purchase capsules from us.

  • $300 for the machine plus shipping, plus $25 if you'd like a custom built wooden stand (with a capsule recycler hole)
  • we'll send you your first 200 capsules free with the machine
  • capsules will then cost .30/each with wrapped gum/poem inside, shipped in boxes of 200 at a time (plus shipping).
  • + each new issue will include a table of contents page that fits on the front when the issue changes.

--buy a machine from us, stuff your own capsules.

  • $300 for the machine plus shipping, plus $25 if you'd like a custom build wooden stand (with a capsule recycler hole)
  • we'll sell you the poetry sheets at 10 cents/page (first 200 free).
  • we'll send you some lovely stickers for the side of the machine
  • + the table of contents page that fits on the front when the issue changes.
  • You'll need to find a source for the empty capsules (we have suggestions)
  • You may put whatever you like in the capsules (though we ask that you don't put advertising or any other commercially-oriented stuff.

--buy your own machine, stuff your own capsules

  • You may put whatever you like in the capsules (though we ask that you don't put advertising or any other commercially-oriented stuff.)

As you can see, the two options where you stuff your own caps make it possible to have a 25 cent machine, if you're more inclined to do that. With a 50 cent machine your chances of making back your initial investment quickly is much higher, of course.

Each of these options includes a page on our site that says where the machine is, its unique little story out in the big, wide world, with a photo or two. And of course each of these machines come with the built-in fame that you'll suddenly enjoy among strangers and friends alike.

extra notes

  • Each machine holds about 180 capsules.
  • We publish roughly 20 different poets per issue.
  • But of course you get to keep the quarters from your machine! This virtually guarantees that you will corner the market on parking meter change. Just think of the power!

You get your Gumball Poetry machine, set it up and Voila! You've quadrupled the 'cool' of your place. You're making quarters. You're bringing in customers. You're supporting the arts.

We have one stipulation: We continue to own what comes out of the machine. Just like a normal magazine, this is our content, and we reserve the right to only have our content in the machines. If you do have something you want to place inside the capsules please contact us and let's talk about it.

NEED MORE POETRY?

  • If you need a refill, email us before it runs out and we'll send it to you.

Portland Area
We are still occasionally placing machines in the Portland area. If your establishment is in the Portland, OR area, send us an email and let's talk.

If we host the machine we cannot monetarily reimburse you for the space it takes. What we offer instead is some web space, a mention in our newsletter, and the allure of a cool machine that people will fawn over in your space. You can choose option one, though, above.
