Mary Sepulveda

Quilting

My sister is stitching together the quilt
Bits and pieces of my old clothes
She works a little every day,
Joining the threads of our lives together

Bits and pieces of my old clothes
Marked with needle drops of blood
Joining the threads of our lives together
I will sleep wrapped in love

Marked with needle drops of blood
Her fingers dance a nightly prayer
I will sleep wrapped in love
Her dreams instructing me

Her fingers dance a nightly prayer
My sister, who is slowly dying
Her dreams instructing me
Quietly, quietly this is how you sleep

My sister who is slowly dying
Whose fingers I have never kissed
Quietly, quietly this is how you sleep
Joining the threads of our lives together

Mary Sepulveda lives in Oregon City, Oregon where she is considering opening an art gallery.

Reflection on a silent message of love
Though dying, the sister is perhaps keeping her mind occupied by making the patchwork quilt. Being that she uses her sisters old clothes to make it shows that she is wanting to express the closeness that they have had together; but more than that it is something that speaks a message of love and remembrance when she passes on. The fact that she pricks her fingers while quilting can be either the normal "job hazard" or indicative of a hurried situation, being that she wants to complete the quilt before her demise. I really enjoyed this poem---Thanks.

Soft loving strokes
The syncopated repetition mimmicks the quiet weaving of needlework...Really well written poem of quiet love...Thanks

john from Los Angeles

Through repetition (an interesting pattern in itself), mary conveys the mutual love between family members: one sister quilting a quilt for the other while "slowly dying"; the other anticipating the warmth and comfort of the quilt which will wrap her in love. Very touching...
