Suzanne Sigafoos

The News of the Day

Mom razzes Nixon from the couch,
calling him a dumb hammer
and the insult sounds funny
but we are quiet
sneaking glances at her rage.

She screams at LBJ during
the State of the Union
for talking slower
than anyone we know,
cursing each hesitation.

The night we see
a blindfolded prisoner
shot through the head, that's it.
She puts the TV trays away
without a word.

Back in the dining room
every evening at 6:30
we take turns
producing bright stories,
well-paced, funny stories

while she sits at the end of the table,
grieving, furious,
listening.

Like the contrast and imagery
Yes, the last two lines are more potent, but I get the first part, nice contrast and reversal of sterotypes. could use a connector, but it stands fairly well in its simple content.

Another easy-to-relate-to poem
which is important, imo, and which is why I kinda like it. It's easy to follow and accessible.

Lovely!
This poem is so potent because it's so understated. Really enjoyed the read.
