Christine Beyer

Moment
On dirt road grooved beside river
rattling me home

old car's headlights cleave
early winter dark

illuminating
crusted snow crooked fenceline

and the white horse head bowed
beneath starlined sky

repeating its name its name
repeating its name

to the stubbed
winter grass.

Christine lives in San Francisco where she spends her free time making trouble and art. She's been published in Calyx, Crab Creek Review, String Town, and Jeopardy among other places. She also travels all over the country performing a one-woman theater show for Living Voices about the Japanese American internment during World War II.

Lovely, but . . .
I love this poem, its clear and quiet imagery. The white horse in the dark just knocks me out. There is one thing, though . . . I rather wish you wouldn't leave out articles like "the" (say, "On THE dirt road grooved beside THE river") Leaving them out seems a little self-consciously "literary" to me. I know you're just trying to keep out the inessential and leave the emphasis on the images, but . . . well, I guess it's a matter of opinion. Nice job, though.

Not just a...
Excellent poem. Puts me there, appeals to the senses, uses interesting literary devices, and is aptly titled. Consistent with the author's other work, but at the same time shows a movement toward poetry that is meant to be performed and not just read.
