Carlos Reyes

An Italian Song
Umbrella, little shadow, certainly ironic here

The sky closed
Down January

Spread over us
Its black umbrella

Each day the search
For pin holes

In the canopy
More desperate

Our only hope
A quick peek

At real sky
A wink

The sun's eye
Through dark

Silk fabric
To awaken first

Our senses then
Light our way

Through the rest
Of day's night

Winter's rain
The rest of the year

Carlos Reyes won the Bluestem Poetry Award for A Suitcase Full of Crows. His other books include The Prisoner, The Shingle Weaver's Journal, and Nightmarks. (See the same list of books at Powells.com) He lives in Portland, Oregon.
